Day 3: Favourite Star Wars Character

It's quite difficult to choose a favourite character from the Star Wars saga. There are too many to choose from. However, after watching The Empire Strikes Back as part of my Star Wars marathon, I have decided on the character of Lando Calrissian.

Lando is one of the coolest people in the Star Wars universe. He's in charge of an entire city and it doesn't even phase him. Before becoming the leader of Cloud City, Lando was a gambling smuggler, just like Han Solo, as well as the original owner of the Millenium Falcon. Apart from that, that's all we know about Lando.

What I love about Lando is the mystery that surrounds him. We don't know a lot about him, and yet that's all we need to know. If there was a Lando movie which revealed all of his secrets, the charm would be gone. This is the same reason why Yoda is my favourite Jedi. Because of the mystery. Although, having said that, I'd definitely recommend the Lando comic series. It tells you a lot about Lando, and yet leaves you knowing absolutely nothing.

He first appeared in Empire Strikes Back, where he immediately became a fan-favourite. Sure, he betrayed Han, Chewie and Leia, but he made up for it in Return of the Jedi by taking it upon himself to become a general in the Rebel Alliance. Lando helped to defeat the Empire, and the galaxy lived to fight another day. He redeemed himself immensely, and him and Han were best buddies again.

To finish, here's a quote I found from Billy Dee Williams, which really sums up who Lando is:

"The audience was so enamored with Lando, they could forgive Lando for anything. If you're able to play a character that can be sort of a bad guy but has redeeming qualities, those are the best characters to play. That was a great challenge to me, to make him palatable, and it worked." ―Billy Dee Williams, commenting on his work as Lando Calrissian
